Off-grid as the phrase suggests entails that there is no presence of an electrical utility grid in order provide electricity. Often these areas are in a rural locations where there is not necessary a requirement by the utility company to justify the costs of putting in a grid connection. Generally these electrical loads are powered by diesel or other fuel generators.
As these sites are rural, a significant amount of the cost of operation is due to the logistics of transporting fuel to these loads.
Aside from the rising costs of diesel. hybrid power systems are systems that incorporate and combine two or more modes of electricity generation together, usually using renewable technologies such as solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind turbines.
Hybrid systems provide a high level of energy security through the mix of generation methods, and often will incorporate a storage system such as a battery system (BESS), or a hydrogen fuel cell to ensure maximum supply reliability and security.
On top of the energy security, the penetration of renewable energy sources also provides a lower cost of energy to the user. This provides that a significant financial saving not just in fuel and logistics but in maintenance of the generator.
